I am a Blogger Not a Blagger

I am a Blogger Not a Blagger

*Rant Alert

I don’t go around with my eyes closed, I’ve noticed quite a few times that some businesses think that bloggers spend all their time ‘blagging’ for products –  as if all we’re interested in is free stuff.  Can I just state once and for all that this annoys me beyond belief.  I know many other bloggers, including myself, who care passionately about the things they write about and review.  It’s not all about selling our souls for a complimentary pack of wet wipes and a free meal.

Some bloggers (myself included) approach businesses that we see online that are promoting what seem to be fabulous products.    Or they approach us, it works both ways.  If they are interested in the publicity, we provide detailed reviews of that product with quality photographs, informative and intelligent text, links and we splash their details all over our social networks too.  I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so my review blogs take approximately two hours to write, that doesn’t include the time it takes me to set up and take decent photographs.  That’s the minimum time, then there’s the extra time it takes to actually test out the product and promote it online.

I offer quality advertising, an honest opinion that I hope my readers appreciate and I care about what I do and what I write about.  I genuinely do think that if you have a great product I can help people find out about you.  In fact I’m more than happy to do so if it’s a product that I think will enrich people’s lives, including my own.   So if you say you’re happy for me to write a blog for you, don’t you dare get all sniffy on me when I ask for a free sample.   The least you can do is say no thank you, rather than just ignoring me.  One free sample is equivalent payment for my time, my effort and my skills.  If you even sell one of your products on the back of my review, you’ve made your money back immediately.  I’m not being unreasonable and I’m not blagging!

We’re not a rich family, we struggle the same as everyone else, there are hardly any jobs in this area and the few that are available don’t fit around looking after two small children.  I use the skills I have to help make ends meet, and this includes blogging and reviewing.  When I contact people and say I’m available for work, I’m not standing there with my hand out begging, I’m offering you an opportunity.  If you’re not interested, fair enough. Just don’t treat me like I’m a scrounger.

Cage = Rattled.

Cybher & Britmums Blogging Conferences

Cybher & Britmums Blogging Conferences

Here are links to the two major blogging events happening this year. CYBHER and BRITMUMSLIVE if you’d like to find out more about them.

OK, I’ll lay my cards on the table.  I really want to go to either of the conferences above, and I mean really, really, really, really.  You might now be thinking, well why not go?  The answer is because it costs too much for a mum looking after two kids, on one income.  That’s it exactly, I cannot go because I cannot afford it.

That is the situation for almost everyone at the moment I think, times are tough and money doesn’t grow on trees.  So, that is why I feel bad asking for sponsorship.  Are you really in a much better position than me, what gives me the right to ask you to fork out for me to go to a weekend in London to see my mates and listen to a few speeches?  Good question and one which I have thought about a lot.

Businesses have to look for the best return for their time and effort.  Would you really get anything in return for sponsoring me to go to either event?   How would that help you financially in the long run?  What kind of exposure would you get, and would it really be worth it?  Again, good questions.

I’ll give it my best shot.

Blogging is a fabulous way of reaching your target audience.  I write the truth about what I think in regards to products, I write honestly about my life, I air thoughts that are no-one else’s but my own.  If you regularly read my blog, and listen to my ramblings, maybe you think my opinions are worth something.   Should you decide to sponsor me, and if I love your products, I will shout about them from the rooftops!  And if others read this blog, and see what I think, and hopefully value my opinions a little too, I may be able to direct people your way.

However you’d like to do that would need to be discussed, sponsorship would mean an ongoing relationship with the blog I know that much.    Over the last few years I’ve built up 2487 followers on Twitter,  and I’ve been listed 113 times.  I’m fairly well placed to publicise you and your business.  Help me make my social networking addiction useful!!!  *grins hopelessly*  ;O)

There’s been much talk of bloggers and blaggers in some of the online circles I’ve moved about in recently.  I’d just like to assure you I’m not a blagger, I’m not out for something for nothing, I’m just trying to improve myself and my skills and get somewhere with the talents I have which are laid bare on this blog – if you’re a regular reader you’ll already know my strengths, and probably my weaknesses too.  You’ll also know how much the Brink of Bedlam has grown over the last 12 months.  I’m not blagging you, I’m offering a lot in return.  Well I think so anyway! *blushes*

I’m hoping that someone reading this blog sees something in my writing, my blog and my future that is worth investing in.  Should you decide you want to work alongside me, and openly sponsor me for these events, I’ll represent you in the best way I can.

There will be no figures laid out on this blog, I’m happy to accept whatever you can offer to help me get to either of these events and in return I’ll blog my little cotton socks off for you, tweet like a crazy woman for you, display your badge etc.    (all negotiable of course).  One way or another I want to get ‘somewhere’ with the Brink of Bedlam, please say you’d like to help me get there.  Cybher and Britmums are the equivalent of starting blocks for me and my blogging career.  (I’ve been brainwashed by the Olympics!).  If you’d like to run alongside me, please tweet / email me.  My email address is kay@rubbermonkeys.co.uk, my username is @Chaoskay and my enthusiasm is boundless.

Thanks for reading, either way.  Kay :O) xxx

The Light Direction – Brand Buzzing!

The Light Direction

Brand Buzzing!

(I seem to be buzzing a lot at the moment, please excuse me!)

I’ve been approached by The Light Direction which is a company that specializes in ‘brand buzzing’ – ie, they help businesses work out where they are, and where they want to be, and of course how to get there!

In this instance they’re looking to work with cupcake businesses and are able to provide free novel pr & sales opportunities for UK cupcake businesses – so if you’re in the cupcake line of work, you might want to contact them?  And if you’re nothing to do with cupcakes, you might simply just want to wander down the local bakery and grab a bun / cupcake / whatever they’re called and surrender to subliminal advertising.

The Light Direction and Ces Creatively have come up with, quite literally, a very novel approach to marketing.  Through a set of short stories, they use your brand and intertwine it within the plot, whilst marketing the books and of course your business.  So, apparently,  they’ll be a good read, and an excellent way to get your Cupcake making name ‘out there’ in an original and interesting way.

If you’d like to find out more, you can visit their website which is HERE, or you can contact Ces on Twitter under the username @Ces_Creatively.

Disclaimer:  I have received absolutely nothing in return for this blog, I simply think that this is an ingenious form of advertising that shows original thought and it might actually work really well for the right business.  I have no knowledge of how effective this advertising method might be, and take no responsibility for any business who chooses to take up this offer.

PS.  **Does anyone know how I can use WordPress to add this to my brand spanking new, completely empty Reviews page?  For the life of me I can’t work out how to shift this off this main page**  (Swears uncontrollably and slams keyboard around)
